Asking what Jesus would do can be a starting point, but it can also become a way to attribute our preferences to him. Following his example first requires learning what the Gospels actually present.

Practicing Christian living means learning from Jesus and responding to his lordship through love, truth, and service. It does not mean reproducing every first-century cultural detail or assuming Christ's unique place as Savior.

Know the person you want to follow

In Mark 8:27–35, Peter's confession is followed by Jesus' announcement of his death and resurrection and his call to discipleship. Following Christ cannot be separated from his identity and mission.

Read the Gospels in sequence. Notice the context of his words, the people he addresses, and the narrative's development instead of choosing only sentences that suit your expectations.

Jesus is more than a model of kindness. His death and resurrection stand at the center of the faith of those who follow him.

Learn service that does not seek superiority

John 13:1–17 presents Jesus washing the disciples' feet and teaching through example. The Master performs a humble task, challenging the association between importance and privilege.

Some Christian traditions practice foot washing as a rite; others emphasize its application in daily service. The call to humility does not require making one practice a universal measure of maturity.

At home and in community, serve without treating people as instruments. Taking responsibility for a necessary task can express this teaching concretely.

See your neighbor beyond convenience

In Luke 10:25–37, the Samaritan parable answers an attempt to define who qualifies as a neighbor. Mercy becomes practical assistance for an injured person.

The practical question moves beyond who deserves my attention to include how I can act as a neighbor. This may involve time, resources, or referring someone to appropriate assistance.

We need not copy ancient treatments described in the narrative. Teaching mercy does not establish a medical protocol or remove the need for safety and responsible care.

Denying yourself does not mean losing your dignity

The call in Mark 8:34–38 challenges a life organized solely around self-preservation and personal gain at the expense of faithfulness to Christ.

It does not authorize leaders or relatives to demand abuse, exploitation, or silence about violence. Following Jesus does not turn someone else's will into unlimited divine authority.

Discernment includes recognizing when sacrifice expresses love and when a demand uses faith to manipulate.

Choose an observable action

James 1:22–25 connects hearing and practicing the word. Christian application needs to be more concrete than wanting to become a better person.

An exercise for this week

Read John 13 and identify a task you tend to consider beneath your position. Ask whether you can undertake it responsibly without neglecting another duty or seeking recognition.

Also notice how you treat people who cannot offer an advantage. Service reveals motives that correct language can conceal.

Keep learning humbly

Pray for understanding, practice a realistic response, and receive correction. Do not use Jesus' example to accuse everyone around you while avoiding examination of your own choices.

Following his example is a journey of dependence and transformation. Practice gains direction as it remains connected to Christ's person, words, and work.

Biblical passages are paraphrased; the exercise and examples are practical applications.
